Avalon Park Estate Playground – Wodonga City Council

This multi-age playground for Wodonga City Council at Avalon Park Estate, on Glenwood Boulevard features a large multiplay unit with junior and senior zones, a 20-metre flying fox, a 6-metre rope tower, and a basketball court, in Safe Play’s “On Country” colour palette.

The Brief

The council wanted to turn the blank canvas of this newly established reserve into a gathering space for the whole neighbourhood. The brief called for a play space that worked across a wide range of ages and abilities, with enough challenge to hold older kids’ interest and enough accessibility for younger ones, so the playground could grow with the community around it.

Design Response

We built the centrepiece around a large multiplay unit split into junior and senior areas – stairs and a toddler slide on one side, a double wave slide and monkey-bar-topped cube on the other. A variety of swings caters to different ages and abilities, and a 6-metre rope tower and pirouette spinner add extra climbing and spinning options. The standout is the 20-metre flying fox, where kids climb a rubber mound before launching off on the pommel. We finished the site in Safe Play’s “On Country” colour scheme, drawn from the earthy tones of the Australian landscape, complemented by beautiful landscape elements, an accessible concrete path, shade sails and a basketball court.

Outcome

The reserve is now a destination where families can gather, connect and enjoy – accessible and engaging enough for younger children, with plenty to challenge older ones as they grow. Shade sails and covered seating mean families can settle in for longer, and the mix of wood chip and rubber landing zones keeps the whole play area safe underfoot, whatever the kids are climbing into next.
