Belgrave South Primary School

Safe Play Australia delivered an adventure-focused playground upgrade for Belgrave South Primary School in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. The project added a 6m rope tower and a substantial activity course in the school’s signature blue and yellow colour scheme, complementing the site’s existing equipment with new climbing, balance and social play opportunities.

The Brief and Design Response

Belgrave South Primary wanted to build on the play space they already had, rather than replace it – adding more challenge and variety for active, adventurous play. The brief called for equipment that would integrate with the existing playground, reflect the school’s blue and yellow identity, and give students options for bigger, more physical group play than the space currently offered.

We designed a 6m rope tower as the centrepiece of the upgrade, paired with a large-scale activity course that gives students room for lots of climbing challenge as well as space for big, all-in group games. The colour scheme was selected to match the school’s blue and yellow branding and the remaining play elements, helping the new additions feel like a natural extension of Belgrave South Primary’s identity rather than a standalone installation. Every element was positioned to complement the existing equipment on site, expanding the play offering without crowding the space.

Outcome

The new space has been a hit from day one — and we got the most reliable verdict possible, straight from Belgrave South Primary’s own School Captains, who gave the playground their tour and their tick of approval. Students have plenty of room for energetic group games, serious climbing challenge, and even a quieter spot to relax, with the suspended rope element proving just as popular for chilling out as it is for climbing. A space the whole school community can enjoy for years to come.
