Glowrey Catholic Primary School

Safe Play was engaged by Glowrey Catholic Primary School in Wollert to create a unique outdoor play space that encourages imagination, movement, and open-ended play.

The Brief and Design Response

The school’s vision was to incorporate an out-of-the-ordinary, non-standard play structure with a large rubber surfacing area – and our design team saw an opportunity to create something truly special. After close collaboration with the Glowrey staff, a nautical theme emerged — inspiring a vibrant, adventure-filled environment anchored by a large custom-designed ship as the hero of the space.

Proudly Australian made right here in Victoria, the ship feature was designed in-house by Safe Play to perfectly suit the school’s needs, age group, and available space. The surrounding playscape was shaped to bring the theme to life: a flowing “ocean” of high-quality rubber surfacing, sand dune zones that mimic the shoreline, and soft natural grass around the perimeter to complete the setting.

This layered design invites children to climb, explore, imagine, and create their own stories, offering a rich blend of physical, social, and creative play opportunities. The school has been thrilled with how the space has transformed their grounds and engaged students across year levels.

We’d also like to acknowledge Rubberworx, whose exceptional surfacing workmanship played a key role in achieving the dynamic sand, dunes and water effect and overall finish.

The Glowrey project is a perfect example of what happens when thoughtful design, local manufacturing, and creative collaboration come together — delivering a play space that is as unique as it is unforgettable.
