Inclusive Play at Its Best – City of Casey Playground Upgrade

The City of Casey recently undertook a thoughtful and inclusive community consultation process to guide the design of a new playground. Engaging both adults and children, the consultation highlighted a strong community desire for a play space that would be welcoming, engaging, and accessible for all abilities.

Notably, 30% of community feedback referenced special needs, prompting a focus on sensory-rich and solitary play options alongside traditional elements. The top three requested features were sliding, climbing, and swinging—with a clear preference for equipment that could accommodate multiple age groups.

In response to the brief, Safe Play Australia delivered a vibrant and inclusive playground featuring:

  • An interactive shop counter for imaginative play
  • A modified Cube unit with basket swing, opened on one side to connect seamlessly to the Play Matta pathway
  • A multi-element unit including a wave slide, stairs for easy access, fire pole, rockwall, and a double steel roof
  • Freestanding arched monkey bars for upper body development
  • A spinner, bee spring rocker, and post swing with both toddler and strap seats

To complete the project, Yellowstone Landscaping installed a mix of natural and interactive elements including:

  • Balance logs and a log table with seats
  • Play Matta softfall surfacing and mulch for safety and accessibility
  • Additional interactive panels to support sensory play

This playground stands as a fantastic example of how community-led design and inclusive thinking can come together to create a space where every child feels welcome to play, connect, and thrive.
