Project Overview
Safe Play was engaged by Hastings Primary School on the Mornington Peninsula to replace an outdated play space at the front of the school with a fresh, engaging environment that better reflected the school’s identity and surroundings. The result is a nature-inspired playscape that sits thoughtfully within a school community with deep connections to place – one that celebrates the rich cultural history of Bunurong Country through a wonderful collection of artworks and murals across the grounds.
Design Response
The design team took clear cues from the surrounding bush landscape, developing a natural colour palette that blends harmoniously with the environment rather than competing with it. This considered approach ensures the new play space feels like a genuine extension of the school grounds – cohesive, grounded and respectful of its setting.
Play value was a core priority. The space features ninja steps, a warped wall, climbing nets and a track-rider – a strong mix of elements that challenge coordination, build strength and keep kids coming back for more. The selection caters to a range of abilities and play styles, encouraging both individual challenge and social, active play.
Outcome
The finished space has landed beautifully – a play environment that’s as thoughtful as it is engaging. It replaces what was there before with something the whole school community can be proud of: a space that honours its surroundings, supports active development, and fits naturally into a school that clearly values culture, place and belonging.
And in what we’re taking as the ultimate seal of approval – a resident koala stopped by to inspect the crew’s work during installation.
