Project Overview

Mildura Specialist School engaged us to design and deliver a new playground befitting the school’s unique and vital role in the Sunraysia region. As the only specialist facility serving students with intellectual disabilities across a vast catchment that stretches south to Ouyen, east to Robinvale, west toward South Australia and north into NSW — this school is a major resource for an enormous geographic area. Getting this project right mattered.

Our commitment started before a single piece of equipment was installed. Our team made the journey for an initial site visit (six-and-a-half hour drive from our base), and remained hands-on and available through every stage of the process. For a school that serves students aged five to eighteen with a wide range of needs and abilities, that kind of partnership isn’t optional – it’s essential.

Design Response

The design prioritises inclusive, active play across a broad age and ability range. A series of interconnected rope climbing structures – including our Mega Cubes, climbing walls and rope nets – form the physical centrepiece of the space, offering challenge, coordination and strength-building opportunities for students at different developmental stages.

A highlight of the installation is the large wheelchair accessible trampoline, ensuring that the joy and sensory experience of bouncing is available to every student regardless of mobility. Rubber surfacing across fall zones provides the safety underfoot that a specialist school environment demands, while a bold colour scheme brings energy and visual clarity to the space – it’s both engaging and orienting for students with a range of sensory and cognitive needs.

Outcome

The result is a play space that’s s inclusive by design, joyful in experience and delivered with the care and commitment this school deserves.
