Pyramid Hill Kindergarten – Loddon Shire
Project Overview
Safe Play was engaged by Loddon Shire to reimagine the outdoor play space at Pyramid Hill Kindergarten — a project shaped from the ground up by community collaboration.
Design Response
Following an on-site visit, the team saw just how hands-on and engaged the children are in outdoor play, which ended up guiding the design direction. Balancing fresh, purposeful play elements with thoughtful upgrades to what was already there, the proposal included updating a worn and rusted boat feature with a new dinghy – cleaner, safer and more engaging for young players. The existing two-swing setup made way for a basket swing, offering a more inclusive option that supports multiple children at once and encourages gentle, shared play.
A standout addition is the new mud kitchen and imagination play area, designed to give children a genuinely hands-on, exploratory experience. The existing tee-pee was removed to make room for this and create a safer, more functional layout overall. In its place, an extensive sensory play area introduces panels that engage children’s senses and support cognitive, motor and social development in an active, enjoyable way.
Outcome
The result is a kindergarten play space that’s been shaped by the community it serves and designed to engage and grow with the children who use it every day. Purposeful, inclusive and full of exploratory play value, it gives Pyramid Hill’s youngest learners a richer, safer outdoor environment to call their own.
