Roxburgh Rise Primary School – Junior Playground

Project Overview
In conjunction with the successful delivery of the Roxburgh Rise PS senior play space, Safe Play designed and delivered a complementary junior playground at Roxburgh Rise Primary School. The brief called for a playful, engaging space that distributes children effectively across multiple activity zones – particularly during the inevitable rush as the bell signals it’s playtime.

Design Response
Our design team created a two-zone junior playground to naturally disperse students and support free, safe movement across the space. This intentional layout helps reduce congestion during peak play times and encourages children to explore at their own pace.

Each zone offers distinct experiences: one area presents slightly greater challenge for students developing confidence and physical skills, while the other provides elements suited to a broad range of abilities. The design includes dual racing slides, offering spontaneous competition and cooperative play, and a large green spiral slide that delivers excitement and visual impact. Rope nets, spider webs, steppers and hang points are woven throughout the play space, supporting strength, balance and imaginative movement. As with the senior space, a cohesive green colour scheme was selected, tying both playgrounds together visually and reflecting the school’s identity. Bright, playful details encourage exploration and joyful play.

Outcome
The junior playground at Roxburgh Rise Primary School delivers a balanced, engaging environment for younger students to climb, climb, explore and connect. Thoughtfully designed to support the natural rhythms of school life, the space fosters confidence and social interaction while reducing congestion during busy playtimes. This play space enhances overall outdoor learning and recreation offerings, creating joyful experiences for children throughout the school day.
