Why risky play matters – the benefits of risk in playground design

Building Confidence, Resilience and Joy.

When we remember our childhood, most of us reminisce about climbing trees, balancing on fences, or testing the limits of how fast we could run. While primarily about fun, these moments also taught us how to judge distance, manage fear, and bounce back from mistakes.

Today, with so much focus on safety, the idea of “risky play” can sound uncomfortable. But if you ask the experts (including what’s in Australia’s own playground standards) risk in play isn’t something to avoid – it’s something to manage.

The Australian Standards (AS 4685.1:2021) are clear that “Risk-taking is an essential feature of play provision … Play provision should aim at managing the balance between the need to offer risk and the need to keep children safe from serious harm.”

Risk vs. Danger

Risky play involves a sense of challenge or uncertainty: climbing high, swinging fast, balancing on something narrow, or trying something new. It’s not about danger, but about discovery. When children take measured risks, they learn to assess their own limits, make decisions, and grow in confidence.

Play Australia’s Risky Play Position Statement explains that this kind of play “builds resilience, problem-solving abilities, and social competence.”

When risk is removed, so too are valuable opportunities to develop independence and confidence. Children need chances to judge their own abilities, make decisions, and sometimes fail in safe environments.

Supporting Schools and Councils with Risk Tolerance

The purpose of great playground design and safety standards is to minimise serious harm, while allowing children to explore, experiment, and grow.

That’s where Safe Play can help. Our experience helps support schools, councils and community groups to make informed decisions about playgrounds – through design expertise, risk assessments and maintenance reviews – so you can feel confident that your spaces are not only compliant, but also developmentally enriching places where kids will love to play.

Balancing Challenge and Safety

Designing spaces that are both safe and exciting is our superpower. Every playground we create is built to Australian Standards while encouraging children to test their abilities and build confidence through calculated risks.

Climbing towers, rope bridges, and uneven terrain promote active learning and healthy development. Our Ninja components, Mega Cube activity boxes, and other adventure-inspired structures provide just the right mix of excitement and security, so children can experience the thrill of challenge within a safe environment.

Check out some of our projects, including ninja warrior courses, and one we’re particularly proud of in East Gippsland. Blending fitness, ninja and climbing elements to create a challenging and engaging playground, the Grey Street Primary School project tests balance, agility and coordination – all with a bright and engaging colour scheme that draws kids in and keeps them coming back.

So, is it worth the risk?

The answer is a resounding yes! Well managed risk in play is a vital part of childhood – helping young people grow into resilient, confident, and capable adults.
Creating environments where children can learn through experience without being exposed to unacceptable danger is at the centre of effective playground design. We’re the experts in helping schools and communities navigate this balance.
